What is an Equity Sprint™?

An Equity Sprint™ is a collaborative, problem-solving process designed to help members break their personal algorithms and approach challenges in new ways. Drawing from hackathons, think tanks, and software sprints, and informed by inclusive collaboration and iterative design, Equity Sprints™ empower members to work across sectors and develop actionable solutions for real-world issues.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Hack Session Approach: Each Equity Sprint™ is a time-bound challenge where participants work intensively to solve a specific problem. Like a hackathon, these sessions encourage rapid ideation and creative problem-solving, helping you break free from old habits of thinking.
  • Think Tank Style: Sprints include think tank-style discussions where deep reflection, interdisciplinary collaboration, and critical thinking come together. You’ll work alongside professionals from diverse fields to explore innovative approaches to systemic challenges.
  • Inclusive and Iterative Methods: Equity Sprints™ use design thinking and collaborative problem-solving methods to refine ideas. Teams work together to adapt solutions as new insights emerge, ensuring the results are both practical and adaptable.
  • Structured Sprint Model: Each sprint follows a 6-week framework, with each week focused on different levels of the problem (e.g., individual, community, organizational, and policy levels). The final week culminates in a Solution Showcase, where teams present their actionable solutions.

What You’ll Do in an Equity Sprint™

  • Collaborate Across Sectors: Work with professionals from fields like public health, finance, education, and community development to address real-world problems from multiple perspectives.
  • Solve Problems Iteratively and Inclusively: By applying design thinking, your team will refine solutions based on collective insights, ensuring that outcomes are inclusive and adaptable to different settings.
  • Leadership and Personal Growth: Through coaching-informed activities, you’ll grow as a leader and collaborator while learning how to break out of familiar patterns and approach challenges in innovative ways.

Equity Sprint™ Example

Imagine an Equity Sprint™ focused on improving access to mental health services in underserved communities. Your team will work together to analyze the problem from multiple angles—considering individual, organizational, and policy levels—refining the solution each week as new insights emerge. By the end of the 6-week cycle, you’ll have a comprehensive, actionable plan ready for development or implementation.

How It All Fits Together

Equity Sprints™ combine inclusive collaboration and iterative design to solve complex challenges while helping members break their personal algorithms. You’ll work through each stage of the sprint with support from your team, gaining leadership skills and building meaningful connections along the way. At the end of each sprint, teams present their solutions in a Solution Showcase, ready for the next steps.
